So let me share a personal story with you…

My mom had two businesses in her lifetime. The first was a catering contract with the government.

In that business, she operated with the kind of efficiency we love to admire in the stories we often read about those superhero small business entrepreneurs.

In her second business she struggled mightily, as the owner of a small hotel that provided European tourists a home away from home while vacationing in the Caribbean.

Why the contrast? Simple really. In the first business, the main objectives were...

To purchase raw materials with the mind of a bargain hunter
Save with the discipline of someone who knows what it’s like to not have money
Follow simple, but ultra-specific, Ministry of Health requirements as regards how to run a kitchen

The first two were life-skills she had acquired from the poverty she grew up in, while the last only called on her ability to read, understand and obey instructions; abilities she also possessed in spades.

Mom’s Biggest Challenge, However

But getting customers, reliably and consistently, and competing with other more sophisticated, better connected and often bigger competitors for the same clientele, was not a task she was up to.

And though she attempted many tactics over the years to get customers through the door, she would ultimately use the proceeds from her catering business to pay the loan for her hotel.

Then once the loan expired, she departed, opting instead to go back to running her catering business, while leaving the hotel for others to “fight-up with”.

My Mom And YOU, Two Peas In A Pod

For many like my mom, the frustration of being proficient in the service our business provides, like mowing lawns, cooking food, providing massage services, etc., yet not being able to get customers through the door, is the bane of our existence.

In one sense, the frustration comes from feeling so close but yet so far from the success we can almost taste.

And in another sense, it’s even more frustrating watching others whose services are not even half as good as ours, thrive… while we flail away in the wilderness.

Mom's Eternal Regret

My mom’s marketing story doesn’t end there, however, as we spoke at different times during the last few years about what she considered the greatest challenge of her life… that hotel.

And every time we touched on marketing, she would talk about the many “experts” who took her money and gave her no results in return.

And in each of those conversations, her voice would break and her eyes would well-up with tears.

And they would do so as she recounted the powerlessness of having to do just as they told her to, simply because she didn't know any better.

And the tears would flow even more still, as she talked of the powerlessness being doubly reinforced as she had nowhere to turn to retrieve her hard-earned money when their "expertise" bore no fruit.

Yes, This Is The State of Marketing Today

Professionals are hired to do a job... make you money.

Yet, when they don't, or better yet, when they can't, they still insist you "pay them for their time".

My first foray into marketing in Trinidad & Tobago came in December, 2008, when I became the default marketing lead for what was, at the time, a little known poetry outfit called, the Lyrical Lounge.

We were the last to join the spoken word fraternity then, but by August of 2009, barely nine months later, we boasted the largest audience on either island for a show of its kind.

On top of that, we were the only ones who had successfully marketed our way into our own newspaper column, as can be seen by some of the clippings below. By 2013, I decided to try my hand at consulting with other businesses after having had a string of successes with projects I was directly involved in.
